A nut is a type of fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten multiple parts together.

The most common shape today is hexagonal, for similar reasons as the bolt head: six sides give a good granularity of angles for a tool to approach from (good in tight spots), but more (and smaller) corners would be vulnerable to being rounded off. It takes only one sixth of a rotation to obtain the next side of the hexagon and grip is optimal.

Cage nuts consist of a nut in a spring steel cage which wraps around the nut. The cage has two wings that when compressed allow the cage to be inserted into the square holes, for example, in the mounting rails of equipment racks. When the wings are released, they hold the nut in position behind the hole.

Cage nuts conforming to this description were patented in 1952 and 1953.This design requires insertion tools to install the cage nut into the hole. Newer designs featuring a squeeze-and-release tab allow for tool-less installation.

Nylock Dome nuts (also known as Self Locking Acorn Nuts) are made to a standard of DIN 986.

Nyloc (nylon insert) Dome Nuts are dome nuts which use plastic/nylon inserts that are located towards the top of the nut – which reduce its inner diameter – therefore deforming the insert over the mating thread and capturing the bolt or screw and providing a locking feature which resists vibrations.

The dome or cap provides a seal, which protects against entry of moisture giving longer life to the assembly. The dome shape is also aesthetically pleasing.

A nyloc nut, also referred to as a nylon-insert lock nut, polymer-insert lock nut, or elastic stop nut, is a kind of locknut with a nylon collar insert that resists turning.

The plastic insert is placed at the end of the nut, with an inner diameter (ID) slightly smaller than the major diameter of the screw. The insert deforms elastically over the threads of the screw, without having threads in turn cut into it. The nylon insert locks the nut by friction against the screw under the applied radial compressive force. Nyloc nuts retain their locking ability up to 250 °F (121 °C)

A weld nut is a special type of nut specifically designed to be welded to another object. There are various types for different applications.
These nuts are very similar to standard hex nuts, but have a locating boss and welding projections. The bosses also keep weld spatter out of the threads.
Hex weld nuts are a six-sided, internally threaded fastener with three triangular weldable projections on the top surface of every other corner of the fastener. The threaded hoe runs through the center and has a pilot for the entire circumference of the opening which extends above the top surface of the nut and the above projections. The remainder of the top surface of the nut is flat.
